Redemption

This is the true story of the creation of this piece :

Always those white backgrounds,” I said to myself.
So I dared, and spread across the canvas
black.

Joyful, amused, I shaped a figure—
that of a Being with open
wings.

One wing slowly pierced the density of the canvas,
emerged, unfolded,
without ever exceeding the limits of the frame.

Then came the drying time.
And while time stretched on,
in the open air,
the sculpted figure grew still,
motionless,
becoming one with the canvas—
black.

And already I imagined
its future golden splendor
floating upon that
black ground.

That was when the air,
which had been light in my room,
began to stir, drawn into an almost unbearable heaviness.

Attentive to every vibration,
I questioned my painting, and it spoke to me
of its darkest hours.

Then the incoherence became clear:
this figure did not belong to that ground.
This Being was not in its right place.

My first impulse? To repaint in
white that
black ground.

Layer after layer, light returned.
But the vibration rang false.

Gold refused to settle,
like a melody played on an out-of-tune piano.

Then I knew: the environment had to change.

The layers of white with which I had covered it
had not changed the environment.
They had only changed
its appearance.

So I lifted the figure away with care.
It had touched that black ground so deeply
that in places I had to tear the canvas.

And beneath the wounded wing, I discovered
the dark hours
it had concealed.

I laid the figure upon a white sheet.

And then opened a space of

Liberation,

Gratitude,

Redemption.

(And I knew then that this would be the title of the painting.)

I offered it a new frame, with a white canvas.

Transplanted,
the figure
radiated.

Two layers of a mantle of pure gold.

One wing unfurled its golden splendor
toward an Infinity to which it aspired,

while another wing,
on the other side of the canvas,
having never left,
through its invisible Presence,
illumined it
and reminded it
of that Infinity
from which it came.

And my tears flowed
with
Joy.
